Scottish Children’s Book Awards

Book 1

S1 Chapters Reading Group students attended this recent Scottish Book Trust award ceremony at the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms on one of our very few, dry and sunny March days. The girls were amongst students from 15 other secondary schools, from across Scotland and were most impressed with the luxurious décor of the Assembly Rooms – especially with three massive, sparkly chandeliers!  Our team competed in an author/book quiz – a school team per table. There was a hush of whispered answers as each team completed their quiz sheets. Although we did not win the coveted prize money for school library books, we had fun. Greenock author, Cathy MacPhail won this year’s Scottish Children’s Book Award in the Young Adult category – a worthy winner. Her book Mosi’s War deals with the very serious topic of what it’s like to be an asylum seeker in Glasgow but also with the scary spectre of vampires! After the award ceremony the girls visited Waterstones Bookshop on Princes Street and there, swapped their World Book Day vouchers for free books. The pictures (photographs) tell the whole story!
