Edinburgh University S2 students: winter book selection at Waterstones Bookshop

Eleven S2 students, accompanied by the school librarian, visited Waterstones Bookshop to select books for the school library. These young people are our Edinburgh University Widening Participation students, who attended a ten week programme introducing them to university study and life, when they were in S1. The university programme is sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group and encourages young people to aspire to stay in school until completing S6 and then aim to apply to university when they leave school. An evening reception celebrating our young people’s success in completing the programme, was held at Edinburgh university in June. Parents, cares, siblings, teachers and university lectures were in attendance when the students from the three participating Edinburgh schools (Liberton and Leith being the other two) were awarded £500 to spend on book selection for their school libraries. Our eleven students represented their school and families, creditable. A thank you should go to Mandy O’Regan at the bookshop, for the advice, her staff offered the students and for the hospitality we all received in the form of hot chocolate drinks and cups of coffee and tea! The students took their task quite seriously and pondered over the selection process for some time and as ever, the staff at Waterstones went out of their way to support the students.
