On Wednesday 25th April, 7 members of the WHEC Debating Team ventured to Glasgow to take part in the Debate Mate Scottish Cup. Prior to the competition, all of the team have taken part in a 17 week long immersive debating programme after school. They have learnt how to challenge an argument, present, rebute and argue with style!
The competition was held at The Royal Faculty of Procurators in Central Glasgow, and even numerous blistering rain showers were not enough to dampen the teams spirit. The day consisted of 3 debates; on a pre-prepared topic and two on unseen topics, meaning our team had to think on their feet to come up with arguments. The WHEC Debating Team rose to the challenge and overcame their nerves in order to articulately argue on topics such as the rise of reality TV and the potential issue building on greenfield sites.
All students were awarded a certificate to acknowledge their efforts. Exciting, one S1 pupil, Erin was awarded the National Prize of ‘Most Improved Speaker’. This award is the student who has improved his or her debating technique significantly over the course of the year and also on competition day itself. We are hugely proud of Erin’s success and all members of Debating Team – well done to all!
Debating Club takes place on Tuesday’s after school in the English Department and we are always looking for new members from any year group!
