As always I hope this finds you well and in good spirits.
So far, 9 days into our full time return to school, things have gone as well as expected and I wanted to thank you for your support. Almost all pupils are complying with our COVID measures and attending regularly. Uniform is getting back to normal with almost all pupils in a white shirt and tie and pupils are informing me they are engaging well with their teachers and getting their learning back on track.
Our teachers are looking forward to meeting 4th Year, 5th Year and 6th Year parents online on Wednesday 5th May to discuss progress and their SQA qualifications. All information can be found here S4,S5,S6 Parents Evening
Today’s update however is about Phase 1 Improvement Works to the school. You may remember back in 2019 we formed a group of parents, council representatives and councillors to set about how we would improve the educational provision across the school campus. This was interrupted due to COVID but is now very much back on track and is due to start on Monday 10th May for up to 54 weeks. This will bring about significant disruption to many of the ‘norms’ that we are used to but I want assure that despite the new entries/exits, changes to office space and different catering facilities there will be no disruption to the services we provide for our young people -it will just feel a bit different for a while!
For you as a parent (and for our young people) one of the most significant changes will be to the catering facilities that we offer. As you know our catering staff go above and beyond to support our young people (and our community) and I reflect back to August 2020 when our Catering staff supported our young people with free packed lunches for every pupil for a month -a truly inspiring image! I have been in contact with City of Edinburgh Council’s catering manager on an ongoing basis and I have been very impressed with his commitment to our school, ensuring lunches and snacks are provided in our temporary facility in the Community Hall and that those accessing Free School Meals can still get a healthy meal. ParentPay will still be in operation and you should continue to ‘top up’ the balance when required.
I will upload the plans and any schematics to our website and send you a text message indicating where you can find all the information should you wish. If you have any concerns about any of the Phase 1 Improvement Works please contact Admin@whec.edin.sch.uk
Finally, just a reminder that there is a bank holiday on Monday 3rd May and an Inservice day on Tuesday 4th May. Have a great weekend when it comes.
